The Walking Dead – Television Series Review

Okay, it has been way too long since I have posted any kind of blog on Brocster Comics. An event last week has caused me to come out of digital hiding and speak my mind on something. Last Sunday night, Halloween, a new television series debuted on AMC at 10:00 PM. That television series was, “The Walking Dead.”

I will be the first to admit, I have never read any of the comic series by Robert Kirkman, but the announcement of the series got me a little excited about it. My dad was a big fan of the comic series and he had a copy of the first volume of the trade, Days Gone Bye. So with the series premier approaching I thought it would be a good time to learn a little more about what was coming. After looking all through the attic, I was able to track down my dad’s book.

Days Gone Bye reads very quickly. There is not much dialogue between characters as it is more of a pace setter for the series, but I have to admit, I liked it. I liked it a lot! The black and white artwork by Tony Moore was great. I have always said, when a book is intended to be black and white, it looks really good and has a lot of character to it. Color books that are made black and white look unfinished.

The pacing of the story was excellent. We are given the setting and a little taste as to what is going on in the first half of the book. However, the first trade did not give us the origin of the zombie outbreak or fill us in to how widespread the infection is. It did however point out that the infected zombies greatly outnumber the living population.

The first thing that I realized about The Walking Dead comic book is that it is not meant to be scary. It is more of a character driven, social drama digging into how people will react to a catastrophic, world changing event. After I quickly read through the first book, I was hungry for more. Good thing the series was set to debut the next day.

Sticking with the theme of the comic book series, “The Walking Dead” television series was not a cheesy gore fest with a lot of cheap scares scattered throughout the show. Looking back, I do not think there was one moment where something popped out and scared the viewers. There were several instances where it seemed like that may happen, but it never did. Instead it created a suspenseful environment that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. To me, that was awesome!

On the topic of pacing, the show is doing a great job. The first episode introduced us to all the characters and added just enough content to stretch it for time. In all honesty, the first book could have been covered in the first half hour of the show. Instead only half the book was covered by the pilot. That to me is a good thing as long as the series sticks to the character driven aspects of the book.

The first episode of the show, also titled, “Days Gone Bye” and it covered just about half of the first volume of the trade paperback. There were several minor changes made, but nothing all that major except for how the first episode ended. I am not going to spoil anything for you, but it’s not looking good for our hero, Rick Grimes.

Congratulations AMC, you have made a fan out of me! I can’t wait for the newest episode, “Guts” to debut this evening at 10:00 PM. From what I have read, it is going to be mostly original content and not much from the comic series. Not only has this series got me pumped for the show, it has also made me obsessed with the comic book. Very rarely does that happen for a lifelong comic fan such as myself. Speaking of the comic, my copy is making its way through work, and so far everyone who has read it, loves it!

Make sure you watch “The Walking Dead” on AMC Sunday nights. Also, join the Spread the Dead contest to help spread the word of this great new series. Hopefully if this show does well, other comic series will be optioned for television.

2010 Plans for Brocster Comics

Thanks for coming back to Broctser Comics today for the big news. Looking back through all of the posts from last year I noticed that this site focused primarily on four unique themes. They were comic books, action figures, wrestling, and personal stuff. These themes are not really that closely related to one another except for maybe action figures and comic books, but even that isn’t always the case.

Today that is all going to change. From this day forward, every post on Brocster Comics is going to be comic book related! That is the bottom line, no exceptions. This may come to a shock to some of you, but there will be no more mention of my personal life, toys, or even wrestling on this site. There’s only going to be comics.

Now I know some of you, probably most of you reading this could care less what I have to say about comic books. That is cool! You don’t have to like comic books. There are enough other people out there who do. Almost all of my link backs have come from comic book sites and publishers. That is the best way to build credibility in this area of the internet.

We all know about Next Wrestling. That was a site Che and I started up in 2009, but neither one of us put too much into it. With the Road to WrestleMania currently in full stride, that site may actually be something worth looking at again. You can expect to see more going on there this year. Again this site will follow a theme. Only wrestling related content will be seen on Next Wrestling.

Another key topic of the blog last year was action figures. 3.75” action figures to be more precise. I know I am probably way too old to care about toys anymore, but I still do. Who cares? A lot of people do in fact, and most of them are even older than I am. That is why I am happy to announce that a new brand has been added to the Brocster family. It is called One Per Case. One Per Case will be all about toys.

Okay, that took care of all the themed topics of the former site. Now let’s look at the real news of the day. Brocster.com is coming back! The great divide has finally happened. Brocster Comics and Brocster.com are two different things altogether.

Those of you who enjoy the goofy videos, random rants about the weather, and reading about what I had for dinner are in luck. Brocster.com will be my place to talk about whatever is on my mind. I am sure there will be plenty of ranting and raving going on, and who knows what else. That site could actually be quite frightening.

That is a grand total of four blogs on this network. This is going to be a lot of work, but I am sure with this kind of organization things will be worth the effort. Now I just have to figure out what to do with all the stuff already on this blog. Should I move it to the blog it should go on, or keep it all intact for history’s sake? That is something I am going to have to think about. Again, your feedback is always appreciated.

New Year, New Brocster

I promised a lot of changes to Brocster Comics in 2010 and now two months into the year they are about to begin. A lot of research has been conducted and a few conclusions have been made about the present state of Brocster Comics. Here they are.

  • This site has absolutely no structure or theme whatsoever. That may be okay for a fun blog that is viewed by my friends, but after all the work I have put into this thing, I am expecting more than that.
  • I hit a dry spell in the middle of the summer and I never recovered from it. If you don’t believe me, go back and look at the posts. They were actually quite good there for a while. Then I guess I got a bad case of writers block or something.
  • Finally, if this site is to be taken to the next level, things need to change, and they need to change quickly. I wouldn’t even want to read this blog and I write it.

With these things said, major changes are on the horizon for Brocster Comics. Some of you will love the changes. Others may hate them, but after a lot of thought, it is something I feel needs to be done as we move forward in the new year.

For the big announcement come back to the site tomorrow at 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time for all the information. This is the biggest step I have made since starting this blogging adventure. I just hope that it is a step in the right direction.

Laying the Framework in Social Networking

Hello everyone! Plans for the new Brocster.com are already beginning. One of the first things I have done is create a Facebook Fan Page for myself. I know what an egomaniac! You can find the page by clicking here. The reason for the page is to provide some more interaction that is site related. The goal was to keep that separate from my personal Facebook page. That way I am more likely to see what is going on without having to scroll through numerous Bejeweled and Mafia Wars updates.

If you haven’t already done so, go ahead and sign up for the Brocster Fan Page at Facebook. Once I get a few more people on there I am going to start some discussion onto what many of you would like to see on this site in the following year. It should be fun. Who knows, there may even be a surprise in store real soon.
